Investing in the Right Investor

Posted on February 22, 2019 in Business Partners, Money & Finance

A while back, I wrote an article entitled “Investing in the Right Investors,” where I talked about the importance of having the right fit.  Just as you would want to have with a business partner who’s actively involved in the company.

My colleague, David Greer (who knows a thing or two about investors and investing) had this to say about choosing investors:

I really liked your advice to entrepreneurs about carefully considering anyone they are thinking of having as an investor in a company. As I’ve advised entrepreneurs – money is a commodity. It’s not about the money – it’s about the investor and what the investor brings to your table to help you grow the business. Due diligence needs to be practiced on both sides of the investment equation.

Here are some of the highlights of what to look for:

  • References
  • Personality “fit”
  • Clear roles and obligations
  • Readiness to confront issues
  • Advisory team to help you choose (and cement the deal)
