The Nuts and Bolts of Running a Business–on 9/23

Posted on December 25, 2020 in Events & Resources

They say that when it rains, it pours.  After a quiet summer, I find myself with 4 speaking presentations taking place within a single week!  In addition to #smallbizchat, a roundtable on buying a business, and teaching a class on protecting your IP for the Levin Institute, I’ll be a panelist at the NYT Small Business Summit in NYC on September 23. Sponsored by OPEN/American Express, it’s a timely topic!

With so many more people needing to consider entrepreneurship (when layoffs occur, necessity is the mother of invention!), my panel, “Grow Your Business: The Nuts and Bolts of Running a Business” is running twice–a morning and an afternoon session.

Some of the things we’ll cover include:

  • When’s the right time to incorporate your business?  Some of this depends on your goals for the company.  Will you be a solopreneur looking to build a “lifestyle” business (essentially, making enough to meet your expenses), or does your vision involve multiple owners, possible investors, and a business asset to sell?
  • What are the legal essentials that every small business should have in place?  Yikes!  Restricting a lawyer to 3? 🙂  I’d go with a business partnership agreement (if you have more than one owner), a solid client contract and website terms/privacy policies. Obviously, the more sophisticated your business model (and the less risk you want to shoulder), the more you’ll want to protect yourself legally.
  • How do entrepreneurs get into trouble with online content? The most important thing to recognize about the Internet is: just because you see it there doesn’t mean it’s free for you to use. As I mention in my article, “How to Stay Out of Trouble When Blogging for Business,” business owners need to be familiar with defamation, copyright, and trademark laws if they’re going to play with online content.

Will you be attending the Summit?  Let me know, and I’ll look forward to seeing you there!
