Focus on the Right Things

By Nina Kaufman, Esq.

I subscribe to SUCCESS magazine and re-read a little snippet from Shawn Achor—also known as “The Happiness Guy.”

He wrote about a business woman who was losing her mind. Spending hours worrying about different aspects of her company.

Like, what wage laws will politicians pass next? What trends am I missing the in the global economy? What if my key employees move away?

Here’s the thing:

Many of the things she worried about were outside of her control.

So there was nothing she could do about them.

Worrying about them led ONLY to more stress. It didn’t resolve or improve her situation.

What do you spend YOUR time and attention on?

There may be a lot affecting your business right now that’s beyond your control. The stock market. Tax increases. Tech innovations. Your best employee marries and relocates to San Francisco.

But there’s still a long list of what you can control.

Your actions. Your analysis of your numbers. Your attitudes. Your part in maintaining good customer relationships.

Every day, you can recommit to improving yourself and your business.

As the New Year begins, what do you want to improve?

Do you have a plan for consistent action steps?

I ask because,

“You are what you repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit.” (Thanks, Will Durant).

It’s easy to lose focus or get distracted as the daily grind obscures the bigger picture.

If you’d like help to stay focused on the things that will actually improve your business, get in touch.
