Are you working this Thanksgiving weekend?

Years ago, when I worked for other law firms, I would routinely come into work on Thanksgiving Friday. I actually enjoyed being in the office Thanksgiving Friday. There was a quiet hush that fell over the desks. You could really focus and bang out the work. The phones rarely rang. No one expected you to be there. (And yes, how pathetic that I was).
Those few of us there felt like a small band of stalwart survivors. Bound by … workaholism? … A pathological desire to earn brownie points of our bosses? Or the relief of clearing our plates before the Monday onslaught?
It still tempts me, many years later. But with family in from out of town, and a night table full of books begging to be devoured, I may just give Thanksgiving Friday a respite from work.
