Pre-Partnership Rule of Thumb

P.S.:  As to the phrase rule of thumb, my research has not come up with a definitive source for claim that the expression derives from a English law that allowed a man to beat his wife with a stick so long as it is was no thicker than his thumb.  Probably folk etymology or urban legend.  The expression rule of thumb has been recorded since 1692 and probably wasn’t new then.  It meant then what it means now:  a method or procedure that comes from practice or experience, without any formal basis.
