The day Les Brown called my office for help…

By Nina Kaufman, Esq.

When you’re running your business, it’s easy to feel alone. Your spouse/significant other doesn’t get it. The kids are clamoring for attention. Employees think you’re Daddy Warbucks. Vendors and strategic partners are leaning on you. And the IRS has its hand out ….

Is it just a pipe dream that someday you’ll get to play with the big dogs …?

I felt the same way — until a BIG DOG called me asking for advice.

I was in my office when my cell phone rang. The caller ID flashed; “Les Brown.” Yes, THE Les Brown – one of the leading motivational speakers in the world, and a premier authority on achievement for small business owners to Fortune 500 CEOs. I’d attended his training sessions and when he learned what I did, we had some great conversations around strategic growth and scaling a business. When he asked for my phone number, I never expected him to call — yet here he was doing just that.

Les was seeking advice on how to strengthen his business — something I do every day for my clients. I asked how I could help, and he gave me an answer that confirmed what I’ve always known:

When it comes to small business, we’re all on the same page.

He said, Nina, I need help scaling my business. The problem is I’m the star, the focus, the hub. If something happens to me, my business grinds to a stop. And, I’d like to cut back on my travel schedule and take better care of my health. That’s not possible right now.

Can you relate? (I don’t think there’s a business owner on the planet who can’t).

That’s why I’ve made it my mission to help business owners smooth out the bumpy

Truthfully, most of our clients start by sounding just like Les. It’s usually the reason they arrive at my desk in the first place.

But it takes an intention. Dedication. And yes—some work to get the weight off your shoulders.

You have a lot of options for places to start:

  • Recurring revenue
  • A core process/methodology
  • Independence, or “resilience” — not having your business depend on a few top people (especially you)
  • Sustained profitability
  • A repeatable sales process
  • Clear systems and standards for training and quality assurance
  • Leverage through a “productized service” or intellectual property

We have programs to help you get off the “Doom Loop”… so you can stop chasing your tail and hitting your upper ceiling.
